On January 23, 2006 the U.S. Department of Energy changed the minimum SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of air conditioners and heat pumps from 10 to 13. The EPA will begin phasing out equipment using hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs, R-22, Freon®) in 2010 and will ban its production by 2020. You may want to replace your system if it is over 10 years old, requires frequent repairs, has a non-repairable refrigerant leak, or if your electric bill is high. Before purchasing a new system:
- Make sure your contractor is reputable, licensed and insured.
- Choose equipment with Refrigerant 410a. The cost of R-22 may increase as it is being phased out.
- Have your contractor size the equipment properly to control humidity efficiently.
- Inspect existing duct work for air leaks.
- Save money by selecting Energy Star qualified equipment.
- Consider installing a programmable thermostat.
- If you want extra quiet operation check the decibel ratings of the equipment.
- Keep the air quality of your home clean with a good quality media cleaner.
- Understand that the least expensive system may not be your best choice.
